Additional Notes of Janis Jo Shumate
STEUBEN, SIMSBURY, Conn. and WICHITA, Kan. Janis J. (Shumate) Brady, 61, passed away, April 23, 2005, at a Bangor hospital as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born Sept. 2, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of G. Edmund and Eleanor Lee (Shook) Shumate. Janis grew up in Wichita, Kan. She married Raymond Brady Aug. 18, 1963. Janis and Raymond moved to Connecticut in 1970 where they raised two daughters. Janis worked in the public school system library in Simsbury, Conn. until 1999 when she and Raymond retired to Steuben. Janis and Raymond were very active in their church communities throughout their lives. They attended and were members of Bethany Methodist Church in Wichita, Kan., Memorial United Methodist Church of Avon, Conn., and most recently, Gouldsboro United Methodist Church. Janis was very active in the church, teaching Sunday School, leading youth groups, and participating in the ladies craft group. Janis was also a volunteer at the Henry D. Moore Parish House and Library in Steuben. Among her many talents, Janis was an excellent pie baker, as well as an avid quilter, knitter, and seamstress. She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Raymond Brady of Steuben; two daughters, Susan Brady and husband, Shaun Cain, of Friday Harbor, Wash., and Kathryn Brady of Philadelphia, Pa.; granddaughter, Emma Cain of Washington; mother, Eleanor Lee Shumate of Ann Arbor, Mich.; brother, John Shumate and wife, Eileen, of Grand Terrace, Calif.; and sister, Jeri Shumate and husband, Joe Romeo, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and many other loving family and friends. She was predeceased by her father, G. Edmund Shumate. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at the Gouldsboro United Methodist Church officiated by Pastor Steve Loan.
